The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) marked its 20th anniversary recently. Although there are differing opinions regarding how helpful or effective the ADA has been, there is a wealth of useful disability employment-related data available in the ADA toolkit compiled by the ADA National Network by DBTAC www.adaanniversary.org/
Of particular note is the effort being made to revitalize the ADA and for the US to take global leadership on the issue. The US is becoming a signatory to -- and having the Senate ratify -- the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The White House Agenda on Disabilities focuses on Education, Discrimination, Employment and Independent Living. One important part for this group to watch is the increased leverage to support small business owned by persons with disabilities. If the certification process is relatively straightforward, it could open doors for entrepreneurial startups to do business with Fortune 1000 and global corporations.
