ISLAMABAD, Aug 19 (APP): Pakistan Poverty Elevation Fund (PPAF) would launch projects for economic empowerment and capacity building of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) with an allocation of Rs.3 billion during next five year.
.
PPAF has also initiated a micro credit project in Quetta, Khairpur and Swat for persons with disabilities under which training for skill enhancement, capacity building and improvement of business opportunities has been provided to the PWDs. said Kamran Akbar, Chief Operating Officer PPAF while talking to APP here on Thursday.
.
He said, “Under the law it is obligatory for all the government, semi-government and private organizations to offer jobs to PWDs or they have to pay fine but unfortunately private organizations prefer to pay fine rather than offering jobs”.
.
Kamal said that PPAF has conducted a survey in 1998 in 34 union councils of earth quake affected areas and the results showed that 10.4 percent population of these areas has any disability. He added that ratio of disable persons is quite high in rural areas as there is no proper mechanism of registration and people hide their disability considering it a social stigma.
.
“These persons with disability have enough potential and talent and capable of rendering services”, he said adding, “they should be offered jobs on the basis of their talent not on the basis of sympathy.
.
Kamal said accessibility of offices, schools and hospitals is the main task for ensuring a conducive environment for persons with disabilities.
