The Global Network for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities

is committed to building a global resource  to which existing business owners with a disability, whether they be experienced entrepreneurs or people with potential, can turn at any  stage of their business journey.

The network is a place to build community, dignity, and self-determination through a market place for disabled and non-disabled business people to connect and collaborate for mutual benefit.

The network is unique in being able to share our expertise, first hand experiences, provide case studies, and leverage contacts/connections to a worldwide audience. It provides realistic encouragement because we have confronted (and in some cases still are facing) the challenges and barriers of business start-ups and ongoing operation with a disability.

We  help people to explore what is possible, overcome barriers and prepare for their start-up journey on how to grow a business with one-on-one mentoring across the disability spectrum.

TORONTO – Eric Wan sways his head from side to side and the sound of tinkling ivories radiates throughout the room.

The pace of the melody accelerates in tandem with the rhythm of his movements, as colourful shapes twirl in sync on a monitor.

With each bob of the head, the computer engineering graduate is crafting his own little music composition through a specialized software program he played a role in helping to develop.

The Virtual Music Instrument is among several projects he’s been involved with aimed at helping children living with disabilities. The work is being done at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, the largest facility of its kind in Canada.

“There’s a lot of kids that are not able to play music just because they’re not able to hold the musical instrument,” said the 32-year-old Wan. “I think that there’s a lot of children who would like to play music through some kind of way, so this is one of the reasons that I’m interested in this project.”

OUR HUMMINGBIRD

The symbolism of our Hummingbird logo

Hummingbird - GNED logo

A few months ago, a group of free-thinking risk takers met through LinkedIn and decided to form an organization dedicated to providing pathways of opportunities for people with disabilities to start or grow their own businesses.

We decided to call the organization the Global Network for Entrepreneurs with Disabilities (GNED). Our logo is a step toward realizing this vision, and is the result of us getting to know and work with each other across three continents and seven time zones!
